The String Cheese Incident continued their sizzling summer tour at the inaugural Merryland Music Festival on Saturday night, playing mostly beloved originals to keyboardist Kyle Hollingworth’s hometown crowd at the iconic Merriweather Post Pavilion.
The first set was highlighted by an early “Best Feeling” that segued into the ever-popular “Johnny Cash”, played for the first time this summer to the delight of the crowd. The new song “Get Tight” is starting to come into it’s own groovy self out of the SCI Soundlab project, in which they are developing entire songs in the studio before exploring them in the live setting. The set came to a roaring close with “Rhythm of the Road” and the grassy favorite “Black Clouds”.
Cheese brought out dobro master Jay Starling of Love Canon for a ripping “Lonesome Fiddle Blues” to get the second set going. Then they pulled out a couple more tracks from the Sound Lab, “Down a River” and “Believe”, before diving into an extended, super psychedelic “Jellyfish” that gave way to “Close Your Eyes” to finish the set. The raucous double encore was a “Desert Dawn” which erupted into “BollyMunster” to end Kyle’s homecoming party on the highest of notes.
