Big Something is quite a fitting name for the powerhouse of a band hailing from Burlington, NC. Last year’s Album of the Year Award from Homegrown Music Network for their release of “Truth Serum” marked Big Something as the only band to have won this award three times with separate releases.
These guys love to blend an original mix of funk and rock with elements of jazz, reggae, and hip hop into one eclectic show that is sure to have you moving from the beginning to the end. Front man Nick McDaniels on lead vocals/rhythm guitar is backed by the shred master Jesse Hensley on lead guitar, and the woodwind elite Casey Cranford on saxophone and electronic woodwinds. Josh Kagel on keys and occasionally horns, bassist Doug Marshall, and Ben Vinoguard on drums round out the rhythm section of this 6-piece band sounding so big that if you closed your eyes you would think you were listening to a full symphony!
Big Something’s shows are loaded with fun, incorporating originals that have made it to the number one spot on jambands.com‘s radio chart, along with covers even the group’s biggest followers couldn’t expect. A few examples from the band’s rounds at this year’s Big What? festival included four Pink Floyd classics to start out their final set, a Gorillaz number that went into a Cyprus Hill funk rap cover without a single lyric missed by McDaniels, and an encore of “What I Got” by Sublime into “Uptown Funk”.
The surrounding region is lucky enough to have the opportunity to see Big Something all over the place. This weekend they play at The Local in Boone, NC, on Friday, and on Saturday in Roanoke, VA, at Martin’s. Check out their website for the rest of Big Something’s fall tour.
