It was one dark day back in December 2017 when Pennsylvania jamgrass band Cabinet announced their indefinite hiatus. Up until that point, for the better part of ten years, the group had slowly established themselves as the premiere progressive bluegrass outfit coming out of the eastern side of the country.
Today, as the latest offering in a series of gradual steps back into the limelight, Cabinet has released a brand new single, “Silver Sun.” Released via Astrology Days Records, the new track features mystically poignant lyrics that have a reassuring, optimistic tone. Cabinet’s own words about the track in their FaceBook post made earlier this morning read: “Thank you all for your continued support. We hope this song brings you some joy in these wonderful times.”
Credited as written by Pappy, the band’s banjo player and one of it’s lead singers, “Silver Sun” without a doubt presents a sound and rhythmic feel very similar to that of the solo material Pappy has been releasing recently, via his King Zeek moniker. Meanwhile brother JP Biondo threads the single together with funky, pop-tinged riffs on mandolin, and Cabinet’s rhythm team of Dylan Skursky on bass and Jami Novak on drums, aided by guest percussionist Brian “Nugget” Gorby, anchor things with a two-step-style upbeat groove.
