Later this month, the northeast will see a rare run of live performances from the exclusive musical supergroup known as The Rock Collection. Joining together a number of prominent artists from the closely knit music scene of San Francisco, The Rock Collection lineup includes Animal Liberation Orchestra lead guitarist Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz, regular Phil and Friends’ guitarist Stu Allen, Zero drummer Greg Anton, along with two members of the current iteration of JGB, legendary keyboardist Melvin Seals and bassist JP McLean. Also joining the group for the run will be Tumbleweed Soul vocalist Stephanie Salva.
So far, only three live performances for The Rock Collection are scheduled, happening later this month from April 26 to 28. The group will kickoff the weekend with a show Friday night at Garcia’s in Port Chester, NY, followed by a show on Saturday night at NYC’s The Brooklyn Bowl, before a final performance on Sunday night at The Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, PA.
In addition to The Rock Collection, each night of the weekend will music from other artists as well. Friday night’s Garcia’s show will see an opening set from the duo known as Acoustically Speaking, whereas The Brooklyn Bowl show on Saturday night will have The Rock Collection open for a headlining set from Pink Talking Fish. Sunday night at The Ardmore will have an opening set by Pennsylvania solo artist MiZ.
The three performances from The Rock Collection will undoubtedly tap into the collective songbooks of Anton, Seals, and Lebowitz, so fans can speculate to hear new versions of anything from the catalogs of Zero, Jerry Garcia Band, ALO, and probably even more. With respective resumes overlapping across many of the most memorable Bay-area jamband and Dead-related projects, the various members of The Rock Collection have a solid history of playing together. However, given their roles in their touring bands, chances to do something like these coming up are all the more rare.
