Earlier this week, modern guitar duo Striking Matches released a new cover, an instrumental duet on Kanye West’s 2004 mega hit “Gold Digger.” Featuring a snazzy new video directed by Josh Kranich, which you can stream below, the cover brings the original a gritty guitar groove that it didn’t know it really needed.
Striking Matches, the stage name for musicians Sarah Zimmerman and Justin Davis, first met in guitar school. Considering the track record they’ve achieved since then, it seems like it’s been a match made in heaven. Their debut album, Nothing But The Silence, was produced by none other than the legendary T-Bone Burnett, and since then the duo has premiered nine songs on TV’s “Nashville,” as well as toured through the UK with the show’s star Clare Bowen.
The Kanye cover might fit right along with the theme that the pair have ascribed to their forthcoming LP release: “Blues-pop—an amalgamation of their blues and roots based guitar riffs, combined with pop melodies.” The new album, which is set to be released sometime this fall, will be produced by Jack Kennedy, best known for his work in the past with Silversun Pickups and BØRNS. Ahead of the new release, the duo will do another brief tour, with shows in California, Tennessee, Georgia, Illinois, and Minnesota.
