LA-based, jazz-funk-fusion trio Organ Freeman are set to release their second studio album, entitled Respect My Art, on September 12. To gear up for what should be a wicked release, The Poke Around has the premier of the record’s first single, “Don’t Eat Your Fingers.”
It’s a lofty challenge to enter into a long established genre, like organ funk, and create something truly new. But in their brief time so far, Organ Freeman has definitely done just that. Their first album, a self-titled release in 2015, exploded the three-piece both into this genre and into the jam scene, showcasing to the world a group blending funk with jazz, rock energy, and thoughtful compositions.
Live, they have been delivering just as impressively. Organ Freeman has won over crowds of new fans at noteworthy musical events like Brooklyn Comes Alive and Summer Camp Music Festival (and next weekend will be burning up Mishawaka Amphitheatre for the highly anticipated Canyon Jam, alongside Spafford, The Main Squeeze, Aqueous, and others), and have also shared the stage with artists from bands like Lettuce, Turkuaz, The New Mastersounds, and more.
As for “Don’t Eat Your Fingers,” what a hot first song to premier from the new album! Bombastic, tight drum work from trio member Rob Humphreys sets the platform right away for some fluid keyboard soloing from member Trevor Steer. The song then cools off multiple times throughout, to a slower and more soulful refrain section, before Steer diverts things with an organ breakdown at the midpoint.
Steer gave The Poke Around some insight into the process of making “Fingers,” saying, “In this case, I wrote the main two sections of this song and was feeling a bit stuck, so I dug through my hard drive and ended up taking the entire second half of a song I had already completed in much more of an EDM style and using it as a bridge.”
In its final few minutes, the tune propels upwards on the energy of an inspired guitar solo from member Erik Carlson. If this first single is indicative of the rest of what’s to come, then we’re ready for Organ Freeman’s second album to be one of the freshest and grooviest releases of the year.
“Our goal for this album was to try to create the biggest, most expansive sound we could as a three piece, so instead of writing and arranging with the instrumentation in mind, we decided not to shy away from layering or sounds that wouldn’t normally be considered in an organ trio setting,” says Steer.
The Poke Around is excited to debut Organ Freeman’s new single “Don’t Eat Your Fingers,” off their upcoming second release, Respect My Art. Give it a listen below:
