The String Cheese Incident and their fans encountered some Atlanta summer storms early last night at Chastain Park Amphitheatre, and neither the rain nor the band let up at any point in the evening, making for an absolute gem of a show down south.
It rained for the majority of the first set, which actually invigorated the atmosphere, as Cheese rocked the house with an opening segue “So Far From Home,” into “Lost” into Peter Rowan’s “Walls of Time.” Keith Moseley shined vocally on another Rowan cover, “Midnight Moonlight,” as he looked over the wet and wild crowd incredulously, before a rare performance of Blue Bossa, which had not been played since the 2015 Red Rocks run, and had been on the shelves since 2011 prior to that. The crowd was amped, raging through the rain, when SCI turned Bossa into the Allman Brothers’ “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More,” a heartfelt, emotional tribute to the recently passed Gregg Allman, and very appropriate to this downpour, “Cause time goes by like pouring rain, and faster things.” “Give Me The Love,” and “Colliding” finished the set, as the storms gave way to a beautiful rainbow, and a very punchy jam led by Michael Kang.
From beginning to end, the whole second set was a masterpiece, as SCI never stopped playing during this whopper of a segue, and yes, it rained a lot more. “Just One Story” provided the bookends of this set, as the band opened up strong with it, and then escalated into one of the most well-received tracks off the new album, “My One and Only.” It is a light, jubilant song that has really come into it’s own with an ever-increasing momentum, and the whole band seemed to have a lot of fun exploring the song a live setting. This broke into “Galactic,” one of the more cherished songs in Cheese’s catalogue, with very few live appearances in the last decade. From here, it was all about the party, “Sing A New Song,” gave way to “Sirens” and “Hi Ho No Show” before they muscled their way back into “Just One Story” to end this massive segue. With fans still picking up the pieces of this whirlwind of a set, the boys came out for an encore of “Falling Through the Cracks” and Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire.”
