George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic rolled into Boston last weekend for the sixth stop on their Mardi Gras Madness Tour. Fans were in high spirits for Saturday night’s sold out performance at the House of Blues, and the energy before the show was palpable. Nephtaliem “Neph” McCrary and Boston-based Nephrok Allstars warmed up the crowd with a high energy performance that set the tone for a positive party atmosphere and a celebration of funk. McCrary is an impressive performer with tremendous energy and his set surely won over some new funk fans.
By the time George Clinton hit the stage, everyone in the house was well primed for the traveling circus know as Parliament Funkadelic. Clinton is now 75-years-old, but he looked to be in fine form, and was aa commanding presence as ever on stage. From the opening notes of “Get Off Your Ass and Jam,” it was clear Clinton wasn’t holding back. The band, a group of touring professionals, were also in high gear, ripping through a set of classics and fan favorites like “Flashlight,” “One Nation Under a Groove,” and “Atomic Dog.” Dewayne “Blackbird” McKnight came to the front of the stage for the inspiring guitar solo of “Maggot Brain.” By the end of the night the stage was filled with dancers and musicians, and the crowd was brought to a frenzy with Funkadelic character, Sir Nose D’Voidoffunk, aka Carlos McMurray greeting fans and taking selfies.
