Animal Collective just announced that their album from Domino records, “Painting With” would be released on Feb. 19, 2016. Following the release the band will be touring Europe and the U.S., kicking off the day the album comes out in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Animal Collective will travel to Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom in between.
Ever since 2012’s chaotic, rhythm-heavy album “Centipede Hz”, Animal Collective fans have patiently waited for their return to the studio. About three weeks ago, @anmlcollective, the band’s Instagram account, posted a picture with the caption, “TheSilenceWillBeBroken”, alluding to the release of the new album. This created pandemonium for fans as they desperately tried to keep back their excitement.
Animal Collective streamed their new song “FloriDada” at the Baltimore airport on November 25, and the song was reportedly on loop for multiple hours.
The group, normally consisting of Avey Tare (Dave Porter), Panda Bear aka Panda Bear, Geologist (Brian Wietz), and Deakin (Josh Dibb), featured artists John Cale and Colin Stetson on “Painting With”. Dibb, who is on hiatus exploring his solo career and humanitarian efforts in Mali, is not recorded on the new release.
All members of Animal Collective have taken a brief hiatus between albums to work on their solo material. Avey Tare released “Slasher Flicks”, Panda Bear released “PBVSGR (Panda Bear vs. Grim Reaper)” and Geologist continued working on the soundtrack to Coral Morphologic, a scientific documentary about the sea life and coral reefs in Miami, Florida.
The band started working on the new album earlier in the year in hopes to create “no B.S. material, and shorter songs” said Avey Tare in an interview with Consequence of Sound writer, Ben Kaye. This is contrary to other Animal Collective albums like “Sung Tungs”, but stays consistent with the psychedelic-synth album “Merriweather Post Pavilion”.
The band started writing and collaborating on music in Asheville, North Carolina, and recorded “Painting With” at Hollywood’s EastWest studios.
