Just a month after the release of their new album, “Street Dogs”, Widespread Panic celebrated Halloween with a sold out two-night run at the US Cellular Center in Asheville, North Carolina. Both nights were filled with freaky jams and included the help of North Carolina fiddle player Nick Sanders from Steep Canyon Rangers, who has a long history with Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring, also a North Carolina native.
The feel of Friday night’s show was mainly jam and blues, kicking off with classics “Send Your Mind”, “Walkin’ (For Your Love)”, “Conrad”, “Can’t Get High”, and “You Got Yours”. From here Sanders and his fiddle joined the stage for the remainder of the set and for most of the songs in the second set including “Steven’s Cat”, “Cease Fire”, and “Porch Song”.
Panic saved the best for last on night one with some major blowouts. Set two is where the boys turned the whole crowd into a bunch of headless horsemen. Keeping with the darker feel of the first night, a ‘blues’ run of “Vampire Blues”> “Contentment Blues”> “Blackout Blues,” was done for the first time in the band’s history. Sanders stuck around for night one’s encore of “Degenerate”> “Safety” and “Red Hot Mama”, making a rowdy end to keep people wanting more on night two.
On Halloween night Panic recreated the Andy Griffith Show, setting the stage up as the town Mayberry and even covering the show’s theme song during the set. The night started off with the favorite “Ain’t Life Grand”, reminding the crowd that the holiday is about celebrating life, past and present.
The second night was packed with covers including three back-to-back-to-back Pink Floyd renditions starting with “Have a Cigar” to “Wish You Were Here” and finally, “Young Lust”, an ode to Floyd’s City Barber Shop going along with the theme of the evening. Sanders was featured again most of Halloween night and helped close out daylight saving time with two more covers; Neil Young’s “Journey Through the Past” and the Crickets’ “I Fought the Law.
